  1. Wear comfortable shoes, loose ones that are easy to get on and off (your feet swell on long flights). Wear comfortable clothing that's easy to put on and off - sometimes the planes get cold, and sometimes they get kind of stuffy - be ready either way. Try and be as tired as possible before you leave, so you can sleep for as much time during the flight as possible. Carry on some snacks and sweets. See the TSA site for info for travelers - it's pretty extensive. Also check your airline's site - they sometimes have their own restrictions. If you get to the airport early enough, you should be able to do curbside check-in. This is usually quicker than going inside and standing in a long line (tip the guys there a buck or two for each bag they check-in for you). After that, go through security checkpoint. Then you hang around for a while waiting for your boarding time (usually about a half hour before departure, but may be earlier than that on large or international flights). Snag a blanket and pillow or two on your way to your seat. Wait for departure, then recline your seat and try to sleep as long as possible.
  2. It's really quite easy. You will arrive at the check in area of San Fransisco International Airport. You should have some kind of ticket information with you such as reservation information. Your travel agent or online booking site should have given you this. You should also have your passport or other ID with you. Check with your travel agent what documents to bring. You will go to the check in counter, and you should do this a good two hours or so before your flight. They will take your large suitcase and put tags on it. You will not have access to this again until you arrive at your final destination. They will give you a boarding card with a gate number on it. Follow the signs to all the gates. You will be required to go through a security check point. You will need to remove anything metallic from your person such as coins, heavy jewelry, cell phone etc. You will place these items along with your carry on back on a conveyor belt for security to check and you will pass through a metal detector. You will need to take off your shoes too. Once you have been cleared by security you can pick up your personal items and head for that gate number you were supposed to go to. Just follow the signs. Once at the gate there should be a screen or display telling you what flights are leaving from that gate. You should talk to one of the airline staff in that gate area to confirm you are in the right place. You then have to sit and wait for a while. You might like to bring an ipod or a good book to pass the time. Keep an eye on the time! About 20 minutes before your flight leaves they will start boarding. They will ask to see your boarding pass that you were given on check in. You can then go onto the plane. Once you arrive at your final destination follow the signs to baggage claim. If all goes well your suitcase should eventually show up on the conveyor belt. Some people tie a small ribbon or something similar to the case to make it easier to spot. On a big flight there may be a hundred or more cases, many that might look like yours. Make sure you have your name and contact details in the address window of the case, and possibly something attached to the case to spot it from a distance (like a ribbon, as mentioned earlier). It is really not that difficult to do, there are always staff that you can ask.
